Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel and under the direct supervision of designated attorneys, the Summer Law Clerk performs a range of legal duties on an as-needed basis, such as reviewing, revising and developing Tribal government ordinances and related policies, drafting pleadings and memoranda, conducting research and analysis, initially reviewing and revising contracts, preparing government resolutions, requests for approval, and accompanying presentations for Tribal leadership, and providing recommended courses of action based on the preceding. The Summer Law Clerk provides other professional-level non-legal research and assistance supporting a team of attorneys to enable the efficient and effective delivery of legal services to Tribal government and enterprise partners.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. Assists Legal Department attorneys and enterprise leadership regarding potential legal issues and makes recommendations to department attorneys regarding appropriate dispositions. Makes recommendations to the dept. attorneys regarding appropriate dispositions.
2. Reviews, evaluates, and analyzes briefs, petitions, motions, and other pertinent documents filed in a particular case to initially determine legal issues, scope and complexity of issues raised, and factual accuracy.
3. Conducts legal research for relevant constitutional provisions, cases, statutes, court rules, secondary sources, legislative history and intent of statutes, and rules of court for department consideration and use.4. Advises on proposed and existing Tribal, state, and federal legislation and participates in drafting proposed Tribal legislation.5. Reviews, analyzes, and prepares proposed revisions to enterprise contracts, non-disclosure agreements, and intergovernmental agreements for review.6. Prepares Tribal government resolutions and requests for approval for submission and consideration by the department and Tribal leadership.7. Works closely with in-house attorneys and the legal operations team to gather documentation and supporting information; generate indexes; verify current legal authorities cited; use citator services to verify precedential value of citations.

9. Organizes, routes, coordinates and tracks assigned work to ensure completion; works closely with the Legal team to ensure that materials are timely received and sent out; distributes, tracks, closes out and archives files and completed work. Archives files and completed work. Maintains case files and database information; compiles statistics based on case information gathered and tabulated; maintains integrity of legally relevant original documents.
10. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.
Education/Experience/Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Must be enrolled in an ABA accredited law school and have completed first year of study prior to clerkship.
- Knowledge of the American legal system, including federal and state court systems and legislative and administrative systems and substantive and procedural civil law.
- Excellent technical knowledge of computerized legal research systems, the Internet, word processing and spreadsheet software, PowerPoint legal software applications and programs and ability to operate a personal computer; ability to develop search strategies, report formats and extract pertinent information.

- High proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Smart Sheet) and Lexis-Nexis.
- Experience with online entity management systems, e-billing systems and Contract Lifecycle Management Systems are preferred.
Certificates/Licenses/Registrations
- At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
