Reporting to the Principal the Manager, Linguistics serves as a vital part of the Serrano Language Revitalization Program and Education department. This role focus is primarily on preparing Serrano language curriculum materials, transcriptions, translations and management of the linguists in the department. This role supports the continued preservation of the language and its archive in a manner that supports the enabling of the 2040 vision.The Manager, Linguistics works to improve and expand community-facing language resources and applications, and delivers completed content to the San Manuel language community, while championing the educational goals and priorities of the Tribe in a manner that reflects and upholds the Tribal community’s 2040 vision, mission, and values.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Designs, develops, maintains, and creates a set of Serrano text corpora or curriculum for pre-kindergarten through grade 12 students who will participate in the Tribal immersion school and maintenance programs.2.    Utilizes in-depth understanding of Serrano specifications to complete all language translations, interpretations, analyses, and research. Identifies Serrano language patterns and synthesizes complex information into comprehensible Serrano text.3.    Studies Serrano language and culture to provide translation and interpretation services for the Tribal government and community members. Establishes and maintains cooperative communication with Cultural Preservation staff and Tribal members.4.    Supervises and collaborates with other Linguists to discover and document the origins of words and the authenticity of texts. Keeps abreast of new research and developments that influence language with a special attention to languages of the Uto-Aztecan family.5.    Collaborates with the Cultural Advisors Working Group and Culture Seat on the Education Board to analyze, interpret, and catalog resources for the preservation and instruction of the Serrano language. Partners with Tribal elders and Serrano speakers to develop ethnography, oral histories, and language resources.6.    Co-designs language programs in the department, like the Fluency Transfer System, and apprentice models, as well as internship opportunities to recruit junior Linguists. Attends conferences, lectures, and workshops to gain additional skillsets and represent the Tribe and Education department. Aids in the development of language teachers and the school immersion program.7.    Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESCarries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles.  

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

•    Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, Bilingual Education, American Indian Studies, or Sociology is required. Courses of study with emphasis in Native American languages or language revitalization is preferred.•    Minimum of 2 years of direct experience working with/in the Serrano language is required. •    Minimum of 2 years of experience in an educational or academic field with a language other than English is preferred.•    A minimum of 2 years of experience working with small-to-medium sized teams with a history of managing multiple projects in a demanding environment is preferred.•    Previous supervisory experience preferred.•    Related, relevant, and/or direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements indicated above.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

•    Proven experience with American Indian language(s) as well as knowledge of local Indian communities and sensitivity to Indian needs is required.•    Proficient knowledge and experience in computer programs for both Mac and PC environments is required. •    Practical experience in Tribal Community settings with knowledge of San Manuel, Morongo, or other Serrano-speaking communities, history, culture, and political structure is strongly preferred.•    Experience in language pedagogy or study in multiple languages preferred.•    Must have the ability to understand and communicate nontraditional uses of academic learning in Native American community settings.•    Experience with research processes, qualitative and quantitative approaches, analysis, and writing skills is preferred.•    Demonstrated ability in or aptitude for Adobe Creative Cloud suite (or similar multimedia, publishing, and audio/video-related software programs), Audacity 360 and/or E-Learning software, TshwaneLex and/or lexicography software, Microsoft Office suite (email, scheduling, and connectivity tools), and Google Suite preferred.•    Experience with scripting languages (preferably Python or other higher-level languages) is preferred.

REQUIRED, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS•    As a condition of employment with San Manuel Education Department, incumbents are required to undergo and successfully pass pre-employment and annual post-employment background investigation including, but not limited to, Live-Scan fingerprinting, drug screening and criminal history background check.•    Must successfully undergo and maintain a current negative tuberculosis (TB) test.•    Driving Responsibilities: Role requires regular commuting between locations. A valid driver's license and vehicle insurance with minimum liability limits is required. Role will not operate or drive Tribe-owned vehicles or patron vehicles.
