Reporting to the Sr. VP, Human Resources, the Director of Compensation and Benefits is a leader in San Manuel’s Human Resources (HR) department. The Director of Compensation and Benefits is responsible for the strategy, research, design, and overall management of total reward policies and programs (base salary, short-term incentives, long-term incentives, market pricing, and benefits), as well as the associated training, communication, and technology enablers to support the organization’s values, vision and goals. This includes being the key thought leader promoting benefits and compensation into the integration of the entire enterprise portfolio offerings to the organization.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes strategies and programs designed to achieve San Manuel’s strategic goals supported by compensation and benefits programs and policies.
  • Responsible for the planning, analysis, obtaining leadership buy-in, development and implementation for all compensation and benefits offerings through collaboration with the HR team and the appropriate Executive Team Leader(s) to align with the organization's strategic goals.
  • Plan, implement, and manage all total reward programs and initiatives. Oversee plans, policies, and processes, including administration, communication, and training enablers.
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate an effective total rewards framework strategically aligned with and in support of our performance-based culture.
  • Provide consultative advice and excellent customer service to managers and HR business partners on total rewards decisions (e.g. promotions/transfers, job offers) and policy and guideline interpretation.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships within the HR department and across the organization, with a high-level of effective interface with HR team members, Finance, Payroll, IT and Legal.
  • Oversees the compensation and benefit teams.
  • Oversees salary structures, development of salary budget and prepares policies and procedures to ensure the achievement of equitable and competitive employee compensation.
  • Oversees job analyses to determine appropriate market pricing; reviews and approves salary increases and advises management on compensation actions for employees.
  • Manage relationships with third party vendors and external consultants, including sourcing partners, negotiating contracts, and managing service level agreements.
  • Oversee audits: benefits and savings plan deductions, workers compensation, ACA reporting, and 401(k) programs.
  • Participates in the development and administration of performance review systems to ensure compliance with salary administration guidelines.
  • Other responsibilities, duties, tasks, and assignments that contribute to the mitigation or response to the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles

Education/Experience/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive total rewards (compensation & benefits) experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years managing teams within Compensation and Benefits required.
  • Related, relevant, and/or direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements indicated above

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

  • Must have managed large and complex programs of at least 7,000 FTEs.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects at the same time and deliver quality programs and practices.
  • Must have executive presence and be able to present to Executives and Boards.
  • Must be able to demonstrate influential and negotiation skills with executive leadership.
  • Mastery of advanced Excel skills including complex formulas required.
  • Proven ability to provide leadership, guidance, collaboration, and empowerment is a must.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive business results is required.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
  • Must be current in at least one of the following certifications: CBP, CBPS, CCP or SPHR.
  • Select One of the Following:
    • ☐ Authorized Driver: Role requires operation or driving of Tribe-owned vehicles or driving patron vehicles. A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the insurance carrier is required.
    • ☐ Driving Responsibilities: Role requires regular commuting between locations. A valid driver's license and vehicle insurance with minimum liability limits is required. Role will not operate or drive Tribe-owned vehicles or patron vehicles.
    • ☒ No Driving Responsibilities: Role does not require a driver’s license or insurance.
