Position Summary

Must Be A Sandia Tribal Member.

Under the general direction of the Police Captain, the Police – Intern is responsible for providing technical and clerical assistance to the Sandia Police Department staff.

The internship will consist of an 80-520 hour program (depending upon the academic requirements of the college or university or the availability of the intern), providing them a chance to experience every facet of the department.  The objective plan is leadership development, tracking, and developmental opportunities and to create a match between the organization’s future needs.

Major Duties And Responsibilities

1. Each intern will be scheduled ride-a-long assignments in various divisions throughout the department.
2. Participate in community outreach programs, special events, and initiatives aimed at fostering positive police-community relations.
3. Performs basic support duties for the Sandia Police Department including general citizen engagement and related work as needed
4. Provide administrative support by completing tasks such as data entry, filing, and documentation.
5. Conduct research on relevant law enforcement topics, trends, and best practices to support departmental projects and initiatives
6. Works collaboratively with various members of the Police Department and attend meetings as needed.
7. Attend training sessions and briefings to enhance the understanding of law enforcement principles, policies, and procedures.
8. Assist in drafting and reviewing reports, memos, and other written communications as needed
9. Performs other duties as needed or requested.

11. Ability to work occasionally work odd hours and/or on weekends.

Minimum Qualifications, Education And Experience

Required

1. Must be currently enrolled in an educational institution or have a High School

     Diploma, GED certification or equivalent.

Preferred

1. Unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License.

Licensing Status

1. Must be able to successfully pass a stringent background and character investigation in compliance with PL 101.630.
2. Will require a post-offer, pre-employment and random drug screening.

Working Conditions

1. Work may be performed outdoors and is subject to seasonal extremes and inclement weather.
2. May be subject to odors, dusts, fumes, and gases.
3. Subject to standard office working noise levels while outdoor levels may be much higher.
4. Subject to hazards such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, possible damage to eyesight due to exposure to computer screens, and dangers associated with working outdoors around heavy machinery.
5. Duties require normal dexterity while sitting and standing—also involved are walking, kneeling, climbing, crawling, crouching, and the ability to assume prone positions.
6. Specific required movements include the following:  (25 lbs. Maximum)
   • Trunk-bend, twist, rotate, push, pull, carry
   • Arms-reach, carry, push, pull, lift, twist, rotate
   • Legs-push, pull, twist, rotate, balance
   • Hands-grasp, manipulate, rapid movement, bilateral coordination, eye and hand coordination, finger and overall dexterity.
