Under the direction of the Assistant Director, the Extended Day Program Specialist (Specialist) acts as the primary content instructor for students who need an extended day program that is tethered to a non-traditional school model. The Specialist serves as a case manager who monitors information through varying management systems, school websites and student portals. The Specialist needs a working content knowledge on varying subjects for primarily 6th-12th graders. Additionally, they act as intervention specialists who will be creating/co-creating content to assist students in closing academic gaps. As part of the San Manuel Education Department, the Specialist strives to ensure the quality of overall educational services, programs, and initiatives provided to San Manuel Tribal Citizens.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Assists students with the completion of daily assignments through one-on-one, group instruction, and teaching. Prepares and delivers curriculum for multi-aged, multi-subject instructional programs which cover academic preparation and academic skills building. 

2. Creates lesson plans and locates and organizes external resources for students’ programs, including preparing and delivering special lectures, discussions, and supplemental materials such as guided notes and tailored, instructional resource workshops on academic subject matters to increase students’ skills, knowledge, and competencies.  Proactively case-manages student information through accessing schools’ management systems, school websites, and student portals. Creates and modifies agendas and lesson plans for completing work in accordance with course timelines and adapts to student abilities based on evaluation of student progress and teacher feedback. 

3. Assists with and encourages participation in cultural enrichment programs along with the Assistant Director of Education Supports and Services and the Serrano Language Revitalization Project. Assists in the planning, preparation, and facilitation of the San Manuel Summer Academy. 

 4. Consults students regarding individual subject needs and conducts informal assessments and progress-monitoring to gauge student abilities and needs to prepare and manage a student performance and portfolio system. Schedules and facilitates parent conferences and open houses in partnership with the Academic Acceleration Manager to discuss the student progress, development, strengths, and weaknesses. 

 5. Provides the Academic Acceleration Manager, Assistant Director, and colleagues with weekly updates on pertinent student information, such as academic progress, grades, behavior, and motivation. Provides extracurricular activities to maintain student engagement during non-academic time. 

 6. Escort and supervise students outside of the tutoring area (i.e. kitchen, gymnasium, cultural activities) 

 7. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department. 

Education/Experience/Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university required.   

  • Minimum two (2) years of related experience in a tutoring role is preferred.   

  • Beginning to intermediate foreign language proficiency is preferred (Spanish). 

  • Multiple Subject Teaching credentials preferred.   

  • Experience in early childhood development and student enrichment services preferred. 

  • Knowledge of and experience with Indian Tribes preferred. 

  • Must be willing and capable to learn the Serrano language. 

  • Demonstrated commitment to students and learning.  

  • Excellent relationship-building and management skills.  

  • Strong problem-solving and consensus-building abilities.  

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively.  

  • Excellent organization, time management and follow-up skills; high sense of urgency; demonstrated ability to successfully handle multiple projects concurrently; ability to lead a team.  

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

  • A qualified candidate/employee must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the company’s insurance carrier.  

  • As a condition of employment with the San Manuel Education Department, incumbents are required to undergo and successfully pass pre-employment and annual post-employment background investigation including, but not limited to, Live-Scan fingerprinting, drug screening and criminal history background check.  

  • Must successfully undergo and maintain a current negative tuberculosis (TB) test.
