Position Summary

Provide individual, group, and family counseling primarily on substance abuse and other psychosocial issues; engage in community education and prevention activities. Coordinates with Tribal Court and other Tribal, federal and state agencies to provide services in treating substance abuse and addiction. Locate treatment resources, conduct assessments, treatment planning, evaluation and aftercare for Native American clients.

 Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  1. Provides individual, group and family counseling at the Health Center and in other locations as appropriate.
  2. Screens clients for program eligibility; refers ineligible clients to other community resources.
  3. Conducts assessment, evaluation and treatment for clients in Sandia Pueblo.
  4. Liaison with Tribal Court and other referring agencies.
  5. Ensures that all client charts have complete documentation, including assessment, treatment plan, progress notes and other reports according to established procedures, timeliness and clinical standards.
  6. Maintain confidentiality of treatment and records according to federal and other applicable standards.
  7. In collaboration with other programs and departments, provides educational materials to the community, including presentations and workshops.
  8. Plans and implements community prevention and wellness initiatives.
  9. Promotes coordination and teamwork with Health Center clinical, administrative and contract staff in providing and coordinating client services; attends case consultation sessions and health clinic staff meetings.
  10. Participate in planning programs and developing specific substance abuse policies and procedures.
  11. Locate treatment resources and provide referrals if necessary for inpatient treatment, and intensive outpatient treatment. Provide placement as necessary.
  12. Reports all client and family concerns, complaints and grievances and attempts at resolution to the Behavioral Health Manager.
  13. Establishes and maintains professional relationships with clients, their families, and Health Center clinical and administrative staff.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.
  15. Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility for all team members and are expected to report to work based upon the assigned schedule each day in accordance with the Attendance Policy for Pueblo of Sandia.  

 Additional Responsibilities

  1. Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills in building a cohesive working relationship with co-workers and internal/external contact.
  2. Performs additional duties as necessary.

 Key Performance Indicators

This position has Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) identified as a measurement of success.  KPI’s will be shared with all team members who work in this job title and feedback will be provided regarding the successful completion of the KPI’s as part of the performance review process.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  1. Knowledge of current clinical principles, methods, operations and procedures for the delivery of counseling services, including assessment, treatment planning, documentation and outcome measures.
  2. Knowledge of physical, social and economic effects of substance abuse and special problems facing Native Americans.
  3. Knowledge of client records and documentation standards.
  4. Knowledge of community resources for substance abuse and behavioral health treatment.
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  6. Ability to work effectively with clients of all ages and their families in a Native American community, demonstrate age-specific competencies; ability to respond in a flexible, culturally competent manner to changing community needs and preferences.
  7. Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheets and the internet.
  8. Knowledge of experience with accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.
  9. Knowledge of client and adult learning motivational techniques to provide education to patients and families and assist other staff in developing counseling and teaching skills.
  10. Skills in self-directed organizing and prioritizing of responsibilities and schedules.

   Education And Experience  

 Required

  1. High School Diploma, GED certification or equivalent.
  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or other human service field from an accredited college or university
  3. Minimum two (2) years’ experience in a related professional activity.

Preferred:

  1. Experience in Native American healthcare setting.

Note:  Relevant work experience or education may be substituted to satisfy education and/or work experience. 

License/Certifications/Registrations

The following license is required prior to employment start date:

  • NM License for independent counseling practice (e.g., LISW, LPCC, LADAC, etc).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License.

The following immunizations and titers may be required prior to employment start date:

  • Hepatitis B series or immune by titer
  • Tdap
  • MMR or immune by titer
  • Annual TB test
  • Annual Flu vaccination (seasonal)
  • COVID booster (optional but encouraged)

Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.

Using upper extremities to exert force to draw, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.

Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.

Reaching

Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Seeing

The ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye.

Walking

Job requirements include, in the performance of duties, walking throughout the work area, on various work surfaces throughout internal or external locations.

Sitting

Particularly for sustained periods of time.

Standing

Particularly for sustained periods of time.

Stooping
