Position Summary

Under the direction of the Bosque Crew Supervisor, performs general and specialized labor duties to safely and successfully complete a variety of Bosque restoration projects on the Pueblo of Sandia.  General duties include tree felling, cutting and stacking firewood, slash removal, fence construction/repair, pile burning, seeding, pole and shrub planting, and herbicide application. Specialized duties can include using chainsaws and operating a brush chipper, stump grinder, skid steer, and backhoe.

 Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  1. Applying safe work practices, operates and maintains hand tools, power tools such as chainsaws, backpack or hand sprayers, etc. and heavy equipment.
  2. Must successfully complete First Aid, CPR/AED training, Basic Faller (FAL3) chainsaw safety training, and routine training to improve job skills.
  3. Identifies and removes/treats invasive, non-native plant and tree species using mechanical and chemical methods.
  4. Operates woodchippers, skid loaders, and backhoes once properly trained.
  5. Wearing PPE, handle, mix and, spray herbicidal compounds. Properly handle herbicide and spray equipment to minimize exposure.
  6. Safely operates and maintains heavy equipment such as stump grinder, brush chipper, water truck, dump trailer, skid steer, and backhoe.
  7. Maintain and extend irrigation system into completed project areas. Set up portable water pumps and hose in recently restored areas.
  8. Complete a variety of work orders and special requests submitted by other departments and the Tribal community.
  9. Performs additional duties and responsibilities as necessary or assigned
  10. Participate in outreach and environmental education events for the Tribal Community.
  11. Monitor and patrol roads, fences, and areas of concern within the Pueblo of Sandia boundaries. Clear vegetation or repair as needed.
  12. As needed, may be asked to staff positions in other departments to ensure completion of work projects or maintain minimum staffing.
  13. Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility for all team members and are expected to report to work based upon the assigned schedule each day in accordance with the Attendance Policy for Pueblo of Sandia.

  1. Strong interpersonal skills with all direct work associates as well as networking with all Team Members is essential throughout Pueblo of Sandia whether they hold public facing and/or back-of-the-house positions.

This position has Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) identified as a measurement of success.  KPI’s will be shared to all team members who work in this job title and feedback will be provided regarding the successful completion of the KPI’s as part of the performance review process.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  1. Ability to work in small work groups and under minimal supervision.
  2. Ability to safely operate 4WD vehicles, small hand tools, power tools chainsaws, portable water pump, chipper, and heavy equipment once trained.
  3. Ability to identify native and non-native tree and wildlife species.
  4. Knowledge of safe work practices, standard operating procedures, and reporting requirements.
  5. Ability to prepare and submit standard departmental and Tribal forms, if necessary.
  6. Knowledge of safe handling, mixing, and application of herbicidal compounds

   Education And Experience  

Required

  1. High School Diploma, GED certification or equivalent.
  2. Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License.

Preferred

  1. Six (6) months prior experience in general construction, landscaping, forestry, wildland firefighting, Bosque restoration, and/or yard maintenance work
  2. Heavy equipment operator experience 

Note:  Relevant work experience or education may be substituted to satisfy education and/or work experience. 

License/Certifications/Registrations

  1. Must be able to successfully pass a stringent background investigation.
  2. Ability to obtain and maintain any other licenses and/or certifications as determined by management.
  3. Be insurable by the Pueblo’s insurance carrier for driving privileges.
